Today I was watching Motorweek, and they were reviewing the new M235i...she asked me why it had M badges if it wasn't a real M car. I explained that it was a clever bit of marketing for folks who can't afford a real M2 (if BMW ever sees fit to produce one, anyway) to make them feel better about themselves. She said she'd rather wait a few years and buy an M2 off lease for less than the poor suckers paid for an M235i anyway. Awesome.

Speaking of which I spent the afternoon helping the old man. I sat in the car and cycled through the gears when he told me to. Boring but at least there was a nice view:
Then on the way home I saw a black 458 Coupe broken down on the side of a busy street. Probably an issue with the F1 box.
F the F1. Gated shifters are the only way to go if you want to avoid break downs and actually use your car whenever you want to.

This is true. If you drive it on the street it'll be uncomfortable. With a stick, it's fun all the time, no matter how you're driving.

Honestly if you don't plan on tracking much the M235i is all anyone needs. Plenty of power for the street, and a sporty yet more comfortable ride than an M2 will have. You could track it as well but you'll eventually want the optional LSD. Here's a picture of a real one with a lot better looking front end.

I wouldn't buy one either way, to be honest, I'd prefer an M3 for the extra doors. But I'd also be buying an E46 M3 anyway, because I cannot afford a newer one.
